Surrounded by his father, his Tante Annchen, his brother Heinz, his mother, and to the right his maternal grandparents the Anhuths, Nikolaus celebrated his Abitur, formal graduation from high school, in 1942. It was a day his parents had feared would never happen. He had to repeat seventh grade because he would get off the daily train to St. Adalbert school and would go swimming and hiking instead.

With his brother Heinz and his parents Mitze and Leo, 1944, Nikolaus was home from the front in Hungary.

A last walk through the beloved Walsch Tal a half century later, remembering his courtship, the happy days of his youth, and his beloved Heimat.
Traveling with his favorite travel companion - in charge of the maps, making sure they unfolded properly while he was driving, and taking the blame for all wrong turns.
The lion in winter; the end was in sight. The love of his life at his side.
